Mahadevi Varma was born in 1906 in the United Provinces. She studied in Madhya Pradesh and Allahabad University.  She was part of the Indian Freedom Struggle and was influenced by Buddhism. Her most famous writings were Neehar, Agnirekha, pagal hai kya?, and Neelkanth. She was a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, Jnanpith Award, and Padma Vibhushan.

Mahadevi Varma was also a prominent painter. She took part in Hindi Kavi Sammelans and she was the Editor of the monthly magazine, Chand.
